About São Pedro

The city of São Pedro, located in the center of São Paulo State, on the slopes of Serra do Itaqueri, originated in the mid-19th century when three brothers of the Teixeira de Barros family acquired the Sesmaria do Pinheiros. Initially known as Capela do Picadão, due to an important resting stop for drovers that existed there, the city prospered with coffee cultivation, reaching a production of about 7 million kilos annually. After the 1929 crisis, the city reinvented itself, becoming known for its cross-stitch embroidery and, later, for tourism. The discovery of medicinal waters in its territory led to the creation of the municipality of Águas de São Pedro. Today, São Pedro is a Tourist Resort that attracts visitors for its pleasant climate, the Serra do Itaqueri - ideal for extreme sports - and its cultural manifestations, including craft fairs and popular festivals in honor of its patron saints, São Sebastião and São Pedro.
